My students need processing and regulation tools such as putty, sensory press and stay blocks, and sensory balls to support their sensory and emotional needs.
My students represent a highly diverse and unique population. My students are eager and motivated learners. For so many of our students, our school is home. We have 94% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, so many of the opportunities and resources we offer, are the only ones students can access. For this reason, we as a staff are committed to providing students with every possible support and opportunity that we can.
We are a safe haven for so many of our students, offering interventions, tools, and strategies to support their social, emotional and academic needs.
Our students are incredible and deserve every support and opportunity that we provide them.
My Project
There are many students at our elementary school that struggle with the ability to control or regulate their emotions when they are in a heightened and high-stress situation. This is partly because we have a high number of students who have experienced some form of trauma in their life. These students carry a very heavy load and operate at a continual level of stress. At our school, we are sensitive to these experiences and have taken steps to ensure that students have everything they need when they enter our building.
One of the ways we support students is by offering them a regulation and break space in all classrooms.
In each one of these spaces, students are able to access tools like the putty, sensory press and stay blocks, or the sensory balls to help them calm and enter into some regulatory practices and strategies. This project would help expand this toolbox, reaching and allowing even more students an opportunity to utilize these tools, especially when they are in an escalated state.
The purpose of these tools will be solely for regulation and calming purposes, which will hopefully allow the student to enter back into the learning successfully. Our hope is that students utilize these tools and this space as readily as they need for their emotional and sensory needs.
As students access the space more and more, we want to be able to reinforce the successful use of the space and the tool by offering them a small prize from the prize box! It's important that students be acknowledged for utilizing and accessing regulation strategies when needed.
