1-2 years behind and the gap is getting larger? How can teachers prepare their students to be productive citizens of society and become leaders in their community without proper materials? Based on data our students with disabilities have the ability to catch up to their non-disabled peers with the proper researched based programs to meet their needs
The students that I serve have a variety of needs from Autism to Intellectual Disabilities.
My school is a title one school and students come from various backgrounds/cultures and difficult home lives. A typical student in my classroom is reading on a second to third grade level but continue to struggle with basic phonics and comprehension of text. Of the students that I serve, 60% are males and 70% are Hispanic or African American.
Special Education teachers in my district are expected to collect and analyze data to then deliver direct systematic instruction to bridge the achievement gap.Our budget is only $100 per teacher to buy all supplies necessary.Resources that are given to us are outdated and do not meet the needs of my students: causing piecemeal programs and students becoming frustrated as they are not being taught systematically.
My Project
Many students with special needs struggle with how to regulate their emotions and feelings. Students become bombarded with information in many different ways whether it be visual or verbal. Students with Autism have deficits in how to process that information in a productive way and need ways to calm themselves down if they are frustrated.
When students are upset they need time and a place to calm down so that they can return to class and continue to learn with their peers.
The students I work with have sensory processing disorders and would benefit from having access to fidgets, social story books, noise cancelling headphones and bean bags. Having these items available for my students will help them with their sensory input/output and then return to class with their peers to continue learning.
