Many students with special needs struggle with how to regulate their emotions and feelings. Students become bombarded with information in many different ways whether it be visual or verbal. Students with Autism have deficits in how to process that information in a productive way and need ways to calm themselves down if they are frustrated. When students are upset they need time and a place to calm down so that they can return to class and continue to learn with their peers. The students I work with have sensory processing disorders and would benefit from having access to fidgets, social story books, noise cancelling headphones and bean bags. Having these items available for my students will help them with their sensory input/output and then return to class with their peers to continue learning.
