Keep Calm and Carry On

My students need the parts to make a calming jar, mason jars, glitter of all colors, food coloring, and glycerin.

My Students

Our district is the lowest funded district in our county. Our students come from diverse populations and speak over 20 different languages. 10% of our student body is Special Education. Our students come from varying socioeconomic backgrounds. Our students are a representation of our community. We work to create equal learning opportunities for all of our students. Our graduates attend Ivy League Schools, University of California Schools, State Schools, Community College, Vocational skills, enlist in the military, and get employment within our community.

Our students have a lot of pressures in their life, in school, at home, and in the community.

We have a high rate of students being taken away because of their mental health. We have many students who live in fear due to their immigration status.

My Project

Our students are in need of some calming activities. We did a few activities in December to help get them cope with the holidays and stress of finals--we ended up with 80 kids making slime. We will host an after school program to make calming jars in the beginning of May--that students can use for the month and their finals.

As the recent tragedies in school have shown, schools need to work more on students' mental health, with all stake holders being a part of the solution.

Calming jars have very few ingredients and will help our students tremendously. Our goal is to make 120 calming jars with students after school to see if we can help relieve some stress.

The crisis counselor, an academic counselor, and myself the librarian are all present to facilitate the project and to listen to students needs and concerns. We address their issues and try to find solutions for them.
