This school year we were able to welcome many students from out of the area and comfort those that already consider Daly City their home. It has been a time to encourage teens with minimal resources how to thrive on a tight budget. And allow for students in leadership positions to create more equitable projects for themselves and their peers. \r\n\r\nThe scented playdough was helpful for sensory practices -- students would recall fruits from special meals with loved ones and felt more comfortable recalling and recanting stories from their childhood in groups or while in individual sessions. Tissues were readily available to students for tears and sniffles. The Motts pouches were the first to go! While lunchlines are historically long, as the campus has over 1300 students, 108 frequent flyer students were able to swing by and help themselves to a quick snack or use the snack to introduce a new peer to a place of calm and resource(s). The laminating pouches served as great ways to preserve the client artwork so they could take them home upon termination. \r\n\r\nThese tools provided by Donors Choose may seem small to some but these are the ways we remember conversations, take breaks from our devices, eat, celebrate, cry, and explore and mature our coping skills while we create long-term interventions for hopefully school years to come. Social work and counseling interns-trainees benefit from these tools as well, as they learn to support the many needs of this diverse campus, especially honing in on students who require more services. With your help, we learned that our school benefits from creative interventions to address ongoing changes and obstacles. We are more resilient as a result.
