Kazoo Crew, Part Two: We're On the Move and Growing

My students need kazoos, rhythm instruments, a presentation cart, and a TV to mobilize and expand our "Kazoo Crew" where members of diverse social communities harmonize.

My Students

"That day all the Sneetches forgot about stars, and whether they had one, or not, upon thars." In "The Sneetches," Dr. Seuss illustrates the price we pay for our tendency to focus on our differences. When our differences are seen as less important, a sense of community can flourish.

I am the school counselor in a public, suburban elementary school, working primarily with students in grades 3-5.

Our student body is a highly diverse group economically, ethnically, and socially. My kids are great kids; but, like kids and adults everywhere, they often find it easier to focus on what separates them from one another rather than what connects them to each other. Children express this perceived separation in myriad ways ranging from indifference to hurt feelings to isolation to bullying behaviors. We talk daily about caring and kindness; but while this dialogue is crucial, it is not enough. Several months ago I submitted an outside-the-box project called the "Kazoo Crew." My goal was to create an opportunity for students from diverse backgrounds to interact with one another in a fun way so that they could experience connecting with those they perceive to be different; and by so doing, come to understand that what connects us is more powerful than what separates us.

My Project

The project was funded and the Kazoo Crew started taking shape. In the initial project, kazoos served as “ice breakers” in small groups where we then discussed friendship, empathy, communication, and conflict resolution. The beauty of the kazoo is that it is whimsical and anyone can play it, as such it tends to generate shared laughter, a true community builder. A growing sense of community is apparent among members of the Kazoo Crew. These students have now asked that I take steps to expand the group to include more kazooists and percussionists. They have also asked that I figure out a way to make us more mobile (a presentation cart to hold our Karaoke machine) and more audience accessible (a TV to display lyrics so that audience members can join in more easily). My students have embraced the mission of the Kazoo Crew. This project will allow us to expand in scope our work on friendship, empathy, communication, and conflict resolution.

The "Kazoo Crew" allows students to experience a shared connection with others they perceive to be different from themselves.

This involvement engenders empathy and understanding among my students. Developing the ability to connect interpersonally with a variety of individuals underlies emotional intelligence. By involving these students with one another in a fun, positive activity, they learn more about relationships, empathy, and conflict resolution than I could ever tell them about!
