Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a kindergarten/first grade combination teacher located in Richmond, California. I adore my students because they are so full of light and optimism despite the constant obstacles working against them. Many of my students come from second, third, and fourth generation poverty. In the Iron Triangle, students commonly come from unstable homes where violence and drug use are prevalent.
My goal is to provide a peaceful and safe space for them where they know, every day, how loved, valued, and respected they are.
If I can help to instill these values in them early in their lives, perhaps they can carry those messages of self-love and confidence into their adolescence and adulthood as they fight their way through life.
Life in the Iron Triangle is a constant battle for my students, but in my classroom, we are creating beautiful experiences. My students inspire me not only to be a better educator but have expanded my heart to feel more compassion and love than ever before. They deserve the best.
My Project
In a combination class, we have so many different learning levels. Differentiated math centers are amazing way to reach all of my students needs simultaneously. We have had so much success with our current math centers that we want to continue using expo markers, mini-white board erasers, and reusable writing pockets so that when we work individually at our center of the day, we can use various math strategies to arrive at thoughtful conclusions. We are requesting expo board erasers, markers, and writing pockets that will enable us to have our own work space and rotate efficiently.
We also need a laminating machine that will allow for important flash cards and important name cards to be laminated for durability.
We use our math centers daily and are currently in the process of adding two new centers to our class. The requested storage buckets and rolling caddy will allow us to keep our supplies tidy and pass out supplies efficiently.
The requested materials will improve my students’ learning because they will keep our successful math centers up and running!
