Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work for a public school district. My school is located in a high poverty area. All of my students are at-risk. They come from low-income, immigrant families. They are learning their home language, Spanish, as well as English. For some of my students, it is the first time they are immersed in a formal bilingual environment. In my classroom, they are learning the school subjects, but also social and life skills such as socialize with manners, respect and care for each other.
My students are talented, smart, and eager for learning.
They are also innocent, loving and sweet.
My Project
I would like to provide my students with a comprehensive math hands-on activity lab to stimulate their critical thinking and reasoning, natural inquiry and curiosity, imagination and creativity. My students would have the opportunity to apply problem-solving models, select appropriate tools and communicate mathematical ideas and reasoning through exploratory teamwork.
My mathematicians would be able to learn and apply skills such as number sense, representation, place value, counting, sequence, cardinality, mathematical relationships, connections, predictions, addition, subtraction, comparison, measurement, geometry, algebraic thinking, base 10, time, data collection and mathematical practice through hands-on math activity stations.
The needed hands-on math activity stations are easy activity-filled centers that come ready to use. Each center has everything my students need to build math skills step-by-step. Each one includes question cards that focus on specific concepts, plus fun manipulatives that get children excited about learning —from linking cubes, paper money, fraction circles, plastic coins, tangrams, 3-d geometric shapes, pattern blocks, to car counters and colored clothespins. For example, at the puzzle and match-ups station, students match up the pieces to solve equations, see equivalents side by side and more. At the ten-frames station, students visualize a variety of math concepts using skill-building trays and counters. At the money station, students count coins and bills, match correct money values, and add and subtract money to reach the total. At the capacity station, students measure and compare liquids from 1/4 teaspoon through 1 full gallon. At the daily number talk and problem-solving station, students model math concepts, explain their reasoning and analyze the reasoning of others.
These hands-on supplies would positively impact my students' learning by providing real-world opportunities for practicing and to inspire them to become avid inquirers, natural investigators and enthusiastic and imaginative learners.
