This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a reading teacher, I'm always amazed by struggling readers' resiliency. When a task is challenging, you need the motivation to engage in it, and I've seen over and over my students' capacity to work hard on their reading skills, even when they could be discouraged. They tackle the hands-on learning at our East Oakland school, guided by our core values of community, social justice, integrity, agency, and love. The motivated and persevering K-5 students at my school deserve to have a robust and diverse leveled library of texts to choose from so that they can find and engage in books they enjoy. They also deserve texts that reflect their culturally diverse identities, as well as expose them to people and topics they may be less familiar with.

The role a good book plays in a reader's development should not be underestimated.

When a reader finds a book that interests them, reflects them, educates them, and makes them laugh, it becomes that much more motivating and worthwhile to engage in the reading practice that is so critical for their literacy skills and to build the important knowledge and vocabulary so foundational to lifelong learning.

My Project

Because motivation is so central to success in reading, it is vital that students have a variety of texts at their reading level to choose from for independent reading. Seeing themselves and other diverse people reflected in their reading materials is also important for young readers. Support this project to help build a diverse library of leveled texts for elementary students in Southeast Oakland!

If funded, this project will enable the purchase of a wide selection of diverse and high-interest texts from kinder and 1st grade through upper elementary reading levels.

Providing students with a leveled library will enable them to finally find books that fit their interests and reading levels so they can engage in the practice necessary to grow as readers, both at school and home.
