Justice in Numbers: Exploring Equity Through Math

My Project

As a 7th grade math teacher, I want my students to see math as more than numbers and formulas. I want them to see math as a powerful tool for understanding the world around them. This project is designed to help students explore concepts of racial justice, equity, and representation through real-world data analysis and critical thinking in our math curriculum.

Many of my students come from historically underserved communities and are full of questions about the world.

They’re aware of social issues but often don’t know how to engage with them in an academic setting. By integrating racial justice themes into math instruction, I can help them make meaningful connections between what they’re learning and what they care about.

This project will bring in resources including books, manipulatives, data tools, and materials for presentations to support a unit where we explore social justice through data. Students will engage in hands-on activities where they analyze statistics, create graphs, calculate percentages, and interpret trends on topics that matter to them such as representation in careers, racial disparities in school discipline, wage inequality, and access to education or technology.
