I love how hungry my students are to learn about Science! Frequently, I will stumble upon topics that I thought would hold little value to teenagers, but they surprise me with their true enthusiasm. My students are sincerely craving for more information about a wide range of science topics, and as I explore the areas of Physics, Meteorology, Astronomy, and Geology with them I end up feeling like one of the lucky ones because they inspire and challenge me, every single day.
My Project
I like to minimize the learning hurdles, and distractions in my classroom. As a new teacher to BEHS, I would prefer to spend my time getting to know students, families, and colleagues as opposed to spending large amounts of time searching for basic supplies. As I familiarize myself with the policies and procedures for making purchases, I hope to skip a step with this first round of supplies by asking for the help of BEHS families.
All of the materials on this list are some of my essential "tools of the trade".
Whiteboards can be a very engaging tool in the classroom that allow for all students to be involved in the thinking, and not just the brave one or two students who volunteer their answers. I greatly appreciate technology such as the chromebooks, but I also value more "old school" methods such as making predictions and working through problems by hand.
Rulers, protractors, and colored pencils are amazingly helpful to have on hand. Unless you have spent time in a classroom, you may not realize how much valuable learning time is lost to the gathering of simple materials. I will be completely honest, the clicker and batteries are a 100% selfish request. I have a penchant for getting excited while teaching (and therefore dropping my clicker) - the device on the list looks like it might have a chance to survive more than a few months in my active hands :) The batteries? Well, if a Physics lab doesn't run on electricity, than it runs on batteries, and more is better!
