Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the honor of working with 21 Kindergarten students at a Title 1 (low-income) school in Oakland, California. While a majority of the students speak a language other than English at home, the instruction is provided in English. There are a total of six languages spoken within the student's homes.
My students create 1-3 pages of individual writing samples each day during our writing workshop.
Many of the students choose to spend their free time within the classroom and recess to further their writing topics. The students have a lot to say on a wide range of topics. I love the fact that they present their own ideas as they begin to master the printed English language.
My Project
Our classroom utilizes a writing workshop curriculum in which the students draw, write, and present their thoughts on topics of interest to them on a daily basis. In order to maximize the development of the students, we are in need of the basic supplies.
This request covers the essential supplies for our writing project for the remainder of the 2018-19 school year.
Pencils are used daily for writing and drawing. The more they can write the better. Card stock will be used within the students writing folders to model: alphabet, common sight words, and words specifically related to their writing. This promotes independence reference skills and speeds up their work. I am not able to keep with writing the requested words on the board while I provide differentiated individual instruction. Card stock is also utilized for art projects that extend and enrich their writing. Invisible tape and glue sticks will be used in the construction of original books created by the students. The children create books that include both non-fiction and fiction compositions. Dry erase markers and a portion of the slip covers will be used to practice writing their letters and numbers. The students are able to practice writing advanced words by presenting them with printed models within the slip covers. This allows us to utilize less printed material. The remaining slip covers are used to post the student's writing samples by child. The hanging files will be used to store student work within their individual works in progress files, as well as storing and tracking their progress throughout the year within cumulative files. The sticky notes allow the students to comment on the work of their peers without damaging the original works of literature.
A secondary benefits of these items includes: improved reading skills and self confidence.
