Meet my wonderful middle students! My class is comprised of students ranging from the ages of 11-13. They are new to America and learning English for the very first time. They come from a variety of countries such as El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and Dominican Republic. Many of them have never attended school, and cannot read or write in any language. Some have only attended a few years of school in their native country, or have been in and out of school for numerous reasons.
Many of my students have come to the United States to live with a relative they may not have grown up with.
Many of them are homeless. Despite the trauma of immigration and other challenging obstacles they have had to overcome to be where they are today, they show up each day with a smile on their face. My students are spirited, caring, and motivated to learn. They enjoy soccer, baseball, dancing and volleyball. Some are great artists, some are great rappers, and some are hilarious comedians. I am lucky to be their teacher!
My Project
Some things we take for granted is the idea that everyone has money to bring pencils to school, or that the school has money to give teachers Kleenex, whiteboard markers or sanitizer. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Teachers have to supply these things for students out of their own pocket money, which is a lot of keep up with for the whole school year. I will use these items to make sure my students always have something to write with, wipe their nose with, and have a sanitized desk to protect them from the flu! Students will be using the whiteboard markers and cleaner to do phonetic spelling. They monitor their own progress o individual whiteboards as they progress through a series of phonetics lessons that are individualized to small groups. Every classroom requires these basic items to function.Please donate so that my students have the basic resources needed for a clean and comfortable classroom.
