I teach two sections of an early childhood special education (ECSE) class. Our day is busy exploring various items to help develop all areas of development in the children. The materials in this project will enhance my ability to work on their physical development such as their gross motor skills.
My students are 3- to 5-year-old children with special needs in an ECSE classroom.
There are currently 24 students enrolled with a max of 24 students for the program. This year I have 11 girls and 13 boys in my classes. The majority of my students have language impairments and/or behavior difficulties. They are very curious and energetic students who love to explore. Our daily routine and use of visual supports in the classroom are very important to help my students develop and learn language. The classroom is housed within an elementary school which is a Title I building. I have 2 assistants in my classroom who help make the day run smoothly.
My Project
Children in preschool are learning about boundaries, how to be aware of others, and personal space. Large group movement time like riding bikes and running in the gym help my students practice these skills. My students have a weekly gym time where they can practice running and riding tricycles. Currently I do not have enough tricycles for all of my students to ride at the same time. With the long winters of northern Michigan, my students love being able to ride a tricycle in the gym each week.
Pedaling is an important motor skill for young children for a variety of reasons.
Riding a bicycle requires children to use bi-lateral coordination. It also increases their balance and stability and helps their muscle development. Children develop a sense of pride and confidence when they master riding a bicycle. Riding a tricycle is a complicated skill that requires strength, balance, coordination, motor planning and body awareness. After our time of exercise, my students have better focus and attention to a story or group discussion.
