Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year I will be introducing a STEAM program for our school. As a teacher in a low-income, high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. All of our students receive free breakfast and 90% receive free or reduced-price lunch. Most of my students come from low-income homes and the reading gap starts early because of health problems at birth that slow cognitive, social, and emotional development.
The reading gap can widen when kids don’t have access to books, language-rich homes, or high-quality learning experiences.
It continues to widen even more for kids growing up in poverty.
My Project
Most elementary teachers know just how powerful a carefully selected read aloud can be.
Picture books can instantly captivate a squirmy class of first graders, bring wide-eyed wonder to middle elementary, and spark deep and intellectual discussions with upper grades.
One of my favorite ways to use read alouds with my little ones is to use them to kick off STEM Challenges. These books are perfect for “setting the stage” for a challenge by sparking background knowledge and promoting a healthy sense of growth mindset. These books emphasize the power and potentials of creative play and it’s connections to our world.
