Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My senior students are looking to learn more about the world as they complete their last year of high school. They are kids about to become adults who want to know how they can make an impact on the world around them.
My students are hungry for ways that they can not just LEARN about the world, but how they can CHANGE the world and make it better.
Their senior year is a time when they push themselves to grow - one of my students ran for state assembly, a few created a food bank on our campus, and others created numerous projects to help the community.
My Project
This book will increase students' awareness of the criminal justice system. It will give them real life stories of people (adults & children) who suffered unfairly because of their race or their socioeconomic status.
Just Mercy will help them to ask questions and find answers about how to reform the American criminal justice system.
Students will also read news articles, look up statistics, and view documentaries that give further insight into the criminal justice system. Stories are what help us remember things and what help us see the humanity of an issue, not just the facts. Just Mercy will deepen students' understanding of the criminal justice system in a way that straight facts cannot.
