Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students will learn about the Equal Justice Initiative and the ever incredible work and stories of the founder of the E.J.I., Bryan Stevenson. Stevenson’s adapted version for young adults is perfect for my freshman Ethnic Studies.

In my Ethnic Studies class, this book will be used in my African American Unit to showcase activists and change makers among the Black population.

Each day we will read and have small group discussions to work on reading comprehension.

The Social Studies and English 9th grade departments have been working together to improve reading level and comprehension in students. This task has been proven to be difficult since many of our learners aren’t at grade level and many of these learners, mostly Black and Latino are finding it difficult connecting with any reading materials. I want to find stories that interest them and are written by someone from their perspective so they can continue to find the love of reading.

Students will end the project by “talking” to the main characters of the book through a new AI teacher resource tool. Students will write questions and speak to the characters from the main story through a text like AI application. This will help them feel close to the story and will engage them more in the curriculum.
