Welcome to our English Language Arts classroom. Our high school is tucked in the pines of the beautiful and remote Upper Peninsula. My students are quirky, fun, and high energy. I teach tenth through twelfth graders whose interests range from playing sports to participating in drama camp to showing farm animals at the county fair.
My students inspire me every day with their strength of spirit.
I love how welcoming they are to new students and how being around them feels like being with family.
My Project
My hope is to read a contemporary nonfiction book centered around themes of social justice with my Honors English 11 students. Just Mercy: A True Story of the Fight For Justice will challenge our thinking and show us the power of compassion. Author and lawyer Bryan Stevenson gives us glimpses into the lives of the wrongfully imprisoned and tells us about his efforts to help them fight for freedom.
In addition, I keep a running list of novels requested by my 10th through 12th graders for their independent reading.
Providing books that they want to read is especially important to me because we do not have a functioning school library. My students have a wide variety of reading interests from the classic Gone with the Wind to books by their favorite current writers including John Green, Rainbow Rowell, and poet Ruby Dhal.
