My Students

I teach in a low-income school, and unfortunately, all too often, income affects how students learn. My students are an active group of second graders who are eager to learn as much as they possibly can in the upcoming school year. Their minds are not the only thing active; their little bodies are also very active and sitting still can be a great challenge for some.

Despite our financial challenges, we do not let anyone tell us we can't be successful, and if they do tell us we surely don't believe them.

As a teacher, I will do anything I possibly can to help them succeed.

My Project

My students are struggling readers who are reading at well below grade level. They often get frustrated and sometimes only using books and paper & pencil work becomes frustrating for them. They will greatly benefit from using hands on materials and manipulative to help them learn. The materials in this project will be used to enhance my student's reading, writing and spelling skills.

These materials will disguise everyday reading lessons into fun activities to help them learn letters, sight words and sentence building skills.

The variety of materials will be used in many ways. The magnetic letters will be used to practice phonics skills, such as spelling words, choosing letters when given specific sounds, etc. The sentence building kit will be used so the students can manipulate different words to create meaningful sentences in many ways. The highlighting strips and word swatters will be used to help the students separate specific parts of word passages and stories to help them focus on one sentence at a time instead of the entire page. This will help them to stay more focused while reading. The sight word Bingo game will help to reinforce the sight word skills in a fun way.

The materials will be used in many different ways from large group instruction, to small group centers, and also individual peer tutoring .
