Hi Everyone! Christmas is just around the corner and my 4th graders are ready. Each year we make our Christmas Cards for the teachers and staff. In the past we have bought Christmas Cards, but now we make them. It is fun and educational for the students and informative to the teachers.
My students are Special Education, Hispanic, African American, White, Native American, and great kids. I always say, "My Students", and they say, "Human Beings!
We have really grown this year learning about feelings and caring for one another. My students have realized that Thank you cards, Christmas cards, Thinking of You, and Get Well cards are all part of being thoughtful, respectful, and caring. Not only are they thinking of others, but they are understanding that others have feelings just like they do.
The one issue I have is trying to get parents involved with getting the materials. Children repeat what their parents say and most of the time it is "No, the school needs to pay for it." Then, I have the parents that over buy. It's good that a parent cares like that, but the kids would enjoy it more if their parents were involved too. I have found that it is better for me to buy the supplies for the students so feelings will not get hurt. Trust me, one would think that the students had lost their very best friend when parents say no.
Now....I know that Christmas is just around the corner and we need to get started on the cards. If this is too much, one book would be good. We do have copiers, when they want to print, and I can make copies. I really love the Christmas Around the World activities. The students can see how each culture celebrates Christmas. The benefit is enhancing their character so they will become the citizens we want them to be. Best of all is one day I know that I will get a card from one of them letting me know that they care. I will remember how you and I planted the seed.
Thank you for all that you do for my kids. It feels good to know that out in this big world of ours, someone cares. Bless you everyday!
A Very Humble and Thankful Teacher!
Mother Teresa once said that "Small gifts were the greatest gifts." It's true. I would rather have a card made from a child than a diamond ring. Really!
