My students need text that they can be engaged in and motivated to keep reading! These include Science readers, SuperScience magazines, a set of books about astronomy and many more!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Picture it. You're curled up in your favorite spot, reading your favorite book or you're out with your friends and you know some obscure fact that you remember reading "somewhere." Be grateful for these moments. My students lack the motivation to read because of the lack of resources school wide.
Our class is located in a public school in the Bronx where 99% of our students live in poverty.
They are 28 fabulous students with energetic minds that want to seep in as much information as they can get. They frequently ask very interesting science and world culture questions that always turn into great class discussions. Imagine the possibilities they would have if only we allowed them essential classroom resources like books and current event articles. My students love when it is science and social studies time because they are bogged down by constant reading, writing, and math that can often be tedious. Since they are often one or two grade levels behind the average student, they require extra time for those foundational skills. Unfortunately, that provides them with less time to seep in all those obscure facts, or background knowledge, that global citizens require. Let's combine awesome topics within their reading time to give them the optimum amount of support!
My Project
I have requested a class set of Scholastic Super Science magazines, a set of ecosystem books, a set of astronomy books, and a set of animal books. When a student comes to pick books from our classroom library, I want to be able to show them our cool nonfiction section that lets them wonder and inquire about the world outside those four walls. I have also requested a math card game book to give them extra games to play while practicing their facts. Lastly, I requested a set of 'best for boys' fiction books, and a set of 'best for girls' fiction books. Sadly, boys are often far behind girls in literacy since many fictional books have girl protagonists or problems that involve girls instead of boys. They are largely left out of books, especially in 2nd and 3rd grade levels.
This project is important to my students because it has the potential to deeply impact their lives.
I remember getting into marine biology because of a 4th grade project I did on a leafy sea dragon. From that day forward, I have been fascinated by the ocean, studied it thoroughly and almost went to school for biology! Help my students find their niche and 'get into' whatever topic their little brains desire.
