Our class is located in a public school in the Bronx where 99% of our students live in poverty. They are 28 fabulous students with energetic minds that want to seep in as much information as they can get. They frequently ask very interesting science and world culture questions that always turn into great class discussions. Imagine the possibilities they would have if only we allowed them essential classroom resources like books and current event articles. My students love when it is science and social studies time because they are bogged down by constant reading, writing, and math that can often be tedious. Since they are often one or two grade levels behind the average student, they require extra time for those foundational skills. Unfortunately, that provides them with less time to seep in all those obscure facts, or background knowledge, that global citizens require. Let's combine awesome topics within their reading time to give them the optimum amount of support!
