My 3rd grade students are rambunctious, ambitious, hilarious, little adults. They're intelligent, sensitive, and loving characters who each know Ms. Murray is their family, and I love every single one of them. A short story describes them best: My class noticed that they were the only class not consistently receiving parfaits for breakfast. They found their lack of parfaits were an injustice. Especially since even 1st graders ate parfaits each morning! The scholars first complained, and then they campaigned. They decided to ask the cafeteria staff to alter their breakfast but they were quickly told to reference the school food calendar. Two parfaits a month just wasn't enough while 5th graders ate it daily. The students then wrote a petition and had the entire school sign it, including the vice principal. Long story short, my wonderful 3rd grade class presented a speech in front of the corporate representatives for their cafeteria food along with our principal. Everyone was impressed! The third graders are now able to receive parfaits during their lunch hour as a compromise. This is a small example of how determined and brilliant my class is.
My 3rd grade students simply need books, including two of the very best: Charlotte's Web and Because of Winn Dixie. Each unit I teach, I am given one copy of the text for all 38 of my students. This requires that I make copies of each text we read. Unfortunately, copying long chapter books like Charlotte's Web and Because of Winn Dixie would require a lot of paper, a lot of ink, a lot of stapling (my school doesn't have staples in the printer), and a lot of patience. Having a physical copy of these engaging and classic tales is not only beneficial academically, but will help build pride and responsibility around classroom materials. Thank you!
