Junk Box Challenge

My students need crafts sticks, mouse traps, tubing, canisters, spools, dowels and tape to complete STEM challenges.

My Students

Our school is in a small rural town. A large percentage of our students are eligible for Free and Reduced Lunch and come from homes that are economically disadvantaged. There is a population of students from Somalia, Kenya, and Mexico who are learning English as a second language.

My special education students have intellectual, learning and social emotional needs.

We problem solve daily to find what best learning environment best fits their individual need for the day. Every child learns at a different rate and in a variety of ways. All of the students that I service have a targeted disability within the area of reading.

My Project

My students will be given a box with random items to create rockets, cars, boats, and bridges. In our STEM challenges, my students will need to work together to research, hypothesis, experiment and create working models.

I am challenging my students to use their imaginations, scientific knowledge, and a box of "junk" to create a variety of devices that perform an assortment of tasks.

My students enjoy hands on learning, and love to use their imaginations. The junk box challenges will teach them how to work with others, the benefits of trial and error, analyze their own work and make changes based on their findings. Through the scientific method they will create a tool or machine that completes the challenge.
