I have the pleasure of teaching a third grade class. Many of these students were my reading buddies in transitional kindergarten(tk) so there is a unique bond we have.
My students come from low income families that value their child's education but can not afford to always give them the little extras.
The parents appreciate when I am able to let their child experience those extras in an educational way. I also believe that childhood is a precious time and if you can learn while enjoying yourself - that is priceless.
My third graders come from low economic backgrounds but that doesn't slow them down when it comes to PE, not having enough equipment however does. When I was a student, jumping rope was second nature, unfortunately that is not true today. I am shocked every year at how many of my students do not know how to jump rope.
I am a firm believer that an active student is a more productive student so I try and get them out every day.
"Teacher do we get PE today?" This is my students favorite question
I have come up with a great way to teach them and keep them jumping. I do total group instruction with the large jump rope and then send them off to practice on the smaller jump ropes. Their little hearts are pumping and arms are a turning. The smiles and looks of determination are wonderful. This keeps them from standing in line waiting for their turn, instead they are jumping while they wait.
We all know students are not as active as they should be but with your help I can change that. PE and recess have always been the highlight of many students' days. Unfortunately with so many focusing on testing, the adults have forgotten what is important to the child - running, jumping, and playing with your friends. With your support I will keep this part of childhood alive!
