My Students
My students love to engage in fun games with equipment that will develop both a variety of skills and also fun learning opportunities. My kids love to engage in cooperative learning with fun equipment.
My favorite quote is 'Every child is gifted, they just unwrap their packages at different times'.
My students come from a disparate socioeconomic population. Approx 74% are on free or reduced meals with 30% mobility. With this transient population comes cultural diversity. For many of them their first taste of Health and Fitness is when they enter my gym. I have just over 500 children at my school ranging from 5 to 11. These kids love physical education and you can see it the minute they enter the school gym. The kids who come in at 5 years old need lots of encouragement and guidance to even know how to move around a gym appropriately. Also, a lot of them need guidance as to how to carry out fundamental movement skills such as galloping, skipping, jumping. They need help when it comes to general movement around the gym. I love to teach activities that not only benefit them physically but also develop executive function.
My Project
My students love to play both floor hockey and soccer. Unfortunately, we only have 2 goals for them to use and they are not in very good condition. I would love to replace them with a brand new set. Both floor hockey and soccer not only teach my students the skills of the game but they also learn how to work as a team. As well as using the goals for the above sports we also like to use them in field day. We have a game called Irish Hockey where the students dribble a potato around cones and then try to score a goal. The students love it and how fun for them to be able to use brand new goals this summer at field day.
Jump rope can develop skills such as agility, balance, coordination, timing and rhythm!!
At our school, we will be participating in jump rope for heart after Spring break. We will be using the soccer and hockey goals above to play our games that develop cardiorespiratory endurance and therefore benefit the student's heart health. They will also be jump roping to benefit heart health but also to learn the fundamentals of jump roping. At our school, we have many ropes for the older students but not so many for our younger students. Therefore, I would like to add some new jump ropes to our collection to aid this unit of jump rope soccer and hockey.
Thanks so much for considering putting a smile on our students' faces when they see their brand new goals and jump ropes
