Juicy Fruit! Living Better With Fruits And Vegetables

My Students

Do you remember what it feels like to get candy from your teacher as a reward? Candy and sweets have been linked to good deeds and rewards for as long as I can remember. Why not provide our children with juice from fruits and vegetables instead?!

My students are in a California public school in the 3rd grade and they come from many different walks of life.

My classroom make up includes African-American, Filipino, Mexican, Indian, Afghan, European and Japanese. I am really proud of my students and the way they respect and treat each other. They have really made the classroom a safe place for new ideas.

My Project

I had a juicer for a couple months and it was fantastic! Our class makes fresh juice at lunch time about three times a week. We are sure to wash our hands and talk about the qualities of the fruits and veggies we drink. Unfortunately, the wear and tear of the frequent use and quantity of fruit has broken my juicer. So we need a new one. We are making great (and sometimes, not so great) combinations of fruit and vegetable juice, but I don't really know what I am doing when I mix up the fruits and veggies. I also want to incorporate nutrition lessons and these books will help me do that.

I feel that this is a very important project because our kids have the chance to break free of some of the bad habits that we have.

This has been a learning opportunity for my student and myself. Having a juicer is a key component in our classroom. We are going to start a worm farm and begin composting soil for our garden. A lot of the compost comes from the pulp from the juicer. I hope that our students can see the full circle of life and become future stewards of our Earth!
