Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When students read "The Odyssey", they learn that while the language may challenge them a bit, the themes are instantly relatable and relevant to their lives.

My students are a mix of races and cultures.

They are freshmen students in college-preparation classes. My school is in an area that serves high poverty students. Because students are incoming freshmen, they will be new to the college-prep experience.

My Project

We will read "The Odyssey" to learn how to annotate literature, write literary analysis papers, to learn how literature relates to our lives, and the world around us. We will spend time discussing our modern-day heroes and how those heroes are a reflection of what is important to us. Students will then make inferences on what they believe was important to ancient Greek society by what they read about the society's heroes.

This book will be students first experience with complex literature.

The students will initially feel intimidated by the language, but will then learn how to navigate through the book and make those important connections to their own lives. This is a great text to use as an induction to the college-prep experience.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
