Job Skills Taught Through Coffee Bar

Help me give my students with autism coffee bar supplies and machines to provide them with the vocational experiences, they need to gain employment after high school.

My Project

My students are placed in a separate setting autism class. They are a wonderful group of students who work hard to make the most of their education. A big part of their curriculum focuses on learning skills for daily living and vocational skills. People with disabilities are frequently not given the chance to learn skills they need for employment leading to a high rate of unemployment among adults with disabilities. Being employed in adulthood is linked to higher rates of life satisfaction and a sense of purpose for adults with disabilities. It is important to provide my students with job experiences in school so that they have the skills they need to work in the future.

Another teacher and I run a coffee bar at school to give our students the valuable vocational experiences they need to be successfully employed as adults.

Our students greet customers, take orders, make coffee, count change, and deliver coffee orders. It teaches them the social skills they need to provide customer service and the work ethic they need to hold down a job. The students have worked hard to learn how to run coffee machines and make drinks for customers. The coffee bar gives us a real-life way to teach how to count money and make the change. Additionally, their presence helps raise awareness of people with autism and all the things they are able to do.

I created this project to get the supplies we need for the coffee bar. We charge money for drinks but with the price of inflation, we are not making enough to be self-sufficient. This project would allow us to build up a stock of our frequently ordered items and allow us to keep providing these invaluable vocational experiences.
