In this unit my 3rd grade students will explore the intersection of language, poetry, and music. Our musical journey will begin with a focus on the rhythm of language. We will learn about using rhetorical devices such as personification, onomatopoeia, metaphors, similes, and alliteration to improve our descriptive writing and to analyze themes. Moving on to the interlude, we will work independently and in groups to develop original poems and songs. The crescendo of our composition will include working to create a class songbook, which will showcase our songs, poems, and use of literary devices. Our finale will include a publication and performance of our original compositions, both musical and written set to guitar accompaniment. We will also attend a musical performance at UC Berkeley.
I am a third grade teacher at Milani Elementary School in Newark, CA. Milani is a low income, low performing elementary school. Over half of my students are on reduced or free lunch. Over the summer I created and taught a music/literacy course in a well-resourced summer program. I saw the enthusiastic poets and songwriters that emerged from this course and I want to bring this experience (and my personal passion for music) to my students at Milani.
I will teach this unit to 20 students in my 3rd grade classroom. Since my school is not well resourced, we will need a lot of materials. Some of those materials include: portfolio folders, art supplies, writing journals, art supplies, and chart paper. Additionally, children will go to see a local musical performance at the end of our unit.
