Our school was sadly majorly vandalized at the end of the school year last year. Classrooms were flooded and supplies and books were destroyed. About half of the books in our rich and vast classroom library suffered severe water damage & can no longer be used. These books had been collected for over a decade so the library was pretty awesome! When the kids found out about the vandalism they kept asking if their favorite books were destroyed. Rebuilding our classroom library this year will help to spark a love and passion for reading in my students. Our model of teaching reading (Reader's Workshop, out of the Teacher's College at Columbia University) is dependent on student choice and having a large and diverse classroom library. This allows students to read and comprehend books that interest them and are at their reading level. Rebuilding our classroom library will also be a great way to demonstrate to my students how communities come together to support each other when unfortunate things happen!
