My students represent my city. They are diverse in race, economic status, family makeup, and learning style. This diversity makes my classroom a rich environment for learning--not just for math, geometry, and language but also for empathy, compassion, cooperation, and tolerance.
I teach at a public Montessori program in an urban setting with a free-and-reduced-lunch population of 41%; we are a Title 1 school.
We are an alternative program in our city's public school district, and students are enrolled through a lottery program.
My students need rich reading material that brings voices from around the world to our classroom.
My Project
Each year the Jane Addams Peace Association presents awards to children's books that promote the cause of peace, social justice, world community, and equality. The awards have been presented annually since 1953. For the past several years, I have had the opportunity to read each year's nominated books, and provide input to the judging committee. These books are added to my class library every year and provide rich reading material for my students. The subjects of the books go hand in hand with Montessori philosophy of my school and provide much food for thought for the development of the children in my class. These children often are in great need of high quality literature, as well as the life lessons promoted by the Jane Addams Peace Association. My project would provide these books for my classroom.
