J'ai faim: Connecting to French Culture Through Cuisine

My students need a set of French cookbooks to learn about French culture through cuisine, and grammar guides to help with individualized learning in multi-level classes.

My Students

Savoring the flavors of a people's cuisine brings us closer to understanding their culture.

Students from my rural and remote school are part of a multi-level French program put into two hours.

Outside of school, they rarely get an opportunity to experience world cultures in an authentic way due primarily to the location, but also to the low income nature of our community. For many of my students and their families, trying new foods is both intimidating and rare. As a foreign language teacher, I find that my students are best reached on their plates through tasting. Trying delicious recipes and sharing them with the class builds confidence about traveling and trying new things. Dining together also helps to build class community.

My Project

My students have grown to love the flavors of France which we bring in through class cooking activities. They want to more regularly bring in French food, and having a set of cookbooks will allow them to check them out and try cooking them and bringing them in to share with the class. We discussed the ABC Family matching program and agreed that having an accessible library of French cookbooks will help inspire them to cook tasty meals and come to understand the value of coming together over a meal. In addition to the cookbook library, my students and I decided that a set of simply explained grammar books for them to use would help them to master concepts more easily in our multi-level classes.

Giving my students a chance to experience French food more easily both at home and as part of a shared class experience will help them understand that food from other cultures is not frightening and is quite delicious.

Providing them with resources at their fingertips to self-navigate grammar will give them a sense of confidence and self-direction.
