Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students come from an urban environment. 72% of the students are Hispanic and 23% of the students are Black. 84% of our students come from low-income backgrounds.

We are a magnet school that buses students from across the city.

Our school offers a dual-language program that 1/3 of the students are enrolled in. This program allows the students to immerse in instruction in both English and Spanish. 19% of the population is ESL.

All of our students in the middle grades love learning and work hard to get into the best high schools in the city.

My Project

Our middle school students have started learning about computer science and how to code. They have learned various topics 'unplugged' using solely paper and their critical thinking skills. The next step is to take these topics and go digital.

We want to bridge our studies in math, computers, and the arts to use and create applications through iPads.

iPads offer unique application such as Tynker, codeSpark Academy, and Swift Playground, which are only available on Apple programs. These programs allow students to solve real-world problems through coding and gets them working in a team environment to write and build solutions to their own problems. From animating a character to creating arts and image outputs, with these resources we can start learning about coding for math and for the arts.
