Last week, after I introduced a book we were going to read together, I had a student say to me, "I hate reading." We read the first page and after that I looked at up at him and he said, "Keep going Mrs Guenther!"
If you can get a student hooked into a good book, whether that be a chapter book or a picture book, you can take them on adventures, learn new skills, or even practice good writing!
Most of the students in my classroom are students with learning or emotional disabilities. Many of them have said at one point or another that they hate reading, but each student has read a book that they have loved and enjoyed. Whether it is due to their past experiences or other factors, students need to enjoy reading. Doing interactive read alouds with my students has changed their words. They don't say "I hate reading" but instead, can I go pick one of your books to read? They are interesting and while they are picture books they are inferring and synthesizing information that are skills of an advanced reader.
My Project
Most of my students have had one point or another become so frustrated with reading that they want to give up or have had moments of "what am I feeling?" These books will help them build their confidence and put words to their feelings!
The students will be able to build their confidence in both reading and life and be able to define their feelings and traits of themselves and others using these books.
Reading comprehension and writing about reading is sometimes difficult and research has shown that interactive read alouds allow students to think critically, develop vocabulary, dissect plot and character motivations, and bring joy to their lives with amazing illustrations.
