My Students

After eighteen years in the classroom, my students are still the best part of my job. Every day I walk into my room toward a new day, just waiting to see what my kids have in store for me ... and they never disappoint. They come from all walks of life: high and low income, farms and apartments (some even living in tents), with their families and some in foster care, reading above grade-level and barely able to read - but all with a ton of knowledge in their own right and more than willing to pass that information along to whoever is willing to listen AND all eager to learn and absorb new information into their sponge-like brains.

My students deserve the very best that education can provide, but we are currently not in a place, unfortunately, where education is being made a priority.

Thankfully, there are places like DonorsChoose.org that help teachers compensate for what classrooms would otherwise be missing. I have phenomenal students who all have differing needs when they walk through the school doors in the morning, but I owe it to each of them to meet those individual needs - they are worth nothing less.

My Project

So many students today have a difficult time sitting in a seat for any length of time. I work to provide various seating options for students in my room including sitting at an individual desk, working at tables in chairs, sitting on the floor and using clipboards, laying on the floor and using clipboards, or standing and using a clipboard. Most students move between the different areas during class time but always go to a spot that best fits the needs at that time.

Over the course of my time as a classroom teacher, I have tried numerous designs in my room to provide the best opportunities for my students to be successful, but there is always something missing: the opportunity for more than one student to work standing up without having to lean a clipboard against the wall or a classmate's back.

Through DonorsChoose, I was able to bring in one standing desk with mat for students, and it has made a significant difference. Having a second standing desk with a mat to stand on will provide what is missing for other students dealing with physical pain due to injury, growth, or who want to stand just because they've been sitting for too long. While this project is only for a second standing desk and mat, being able to help two students is better than none.

I am hopeful that this project will lead to greater accomplishment in the classroom and a more welcoming environment where students want to learn and create. I know the difference having a choice makes to me, as an adult, in output and willingness to make an effort; this next step in work-space opportunities will make a difference for my students.
