This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from a diverse, urban community. Each day, they come to school eager to learn despite many personal challenges that some of them face. We are a Title I school where 100% of our students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. Many of our students are English Language Learners.
In spite of all these challenges, my students walk into my classroom with smiles on their faces ready to embrace the day with creative thoughts and a positive attitude.
As their teacher, I strive to foster a safe environment where students feel comfortable taking risks and sharing their ideas.
My Project
My school will be fully remote for the first semester. However, I will be teaching from my classroom. A few years ago my bookshelf was misplaced during the summer. Every month I would display books for students to read on their own.
With remote learning happening from my classroom, I’d like to be able to display my books and have students choose a book for me to read to them aloud during morning meeting.
I’d like to start the year focusing on displaying books on social-emotional wellness. Our beloved principal passed away unexpectedly during the summer, so I know that being able to read these books to my class will help with healing. I also want to add more diverse books to my class library.
