My Students

My Pre-K class is curious by nature. They love to explore and discover. They love to make connections between what we are learning in school and what they have experienced in the world around them. They are 4-year-old little sponges and they have a thirst to learn everything!

They experience life with their senses.

They see things and notice things. They love to touch and feel. They notice smells and tastes that are pleasing and not so much! They hear everything, but sometimes struggle to listen. And that's okay...because they are 4 years old.

Providing them with time to use these senses is my job. When they gain knowledge and experience through real-life, authentic play then I have done my job. If they learn new words/vocabulary within those experiences then I have done my job. Their job is to dive in! And they do so with no fear. They don't care about mistakes because they know that their mistakes are just an opportunity to learn and grow some more.

My Project

For Pre-K students learning to hold a pencil and write on paper can be a challenging adventure. Their hands are not always ready for traditional materials like pencils and paper. We work a lot on building hand strength and fine motor skills and then we are ready to dive into real writing!

Kinetic sand trays, colorful markers and pens and a smooth dry erase surface can make this transition a breeze!

These materials not only make the actual process of writing easier, but they are highly engaging. Kids love to use non-traditional tools and mediums to write. This engagement builds interest and interest builds time on task and time on task builds skills. It's a win-win-win!
