Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 7th and 8th grade students are an energetic bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun. Our bustling middle school is located in a high-poverty, working-class neighborhood. More than half of our student body receives free or reduced-price lunch and speaks English as a second language.
You wouldn't know it from looking at them, but many have already experienced trauma or loss in their young lives.
After school, some kids go home to babysit younger siblings while others attend after-school care until 5 or 6 pm. For young teens, all of this responsibility at home can result in extra exuberance while at school. Although some of them have distractions that prevent them from focusing on academics, the majority of our students are aspiring scholars who are focused on going to college!
My Project
Our fledgling Home Economics program aims to give students experience in "adulting." Cooking, sewing, financial literacy, and career exploration are the bread and butter of our course. I'd like to add a component of the class where students get experience with small home repairs. This tool box will allow us to practice some basic repairs around the school and offer our service to all of the teachers on our campus. The storage containers will help us organize all our fabrics on our shelves by type and also help us avoid unintentionally unfolding a bunch of fabrics when we retrieve something from our shelves. Last but not least, we recently received a new laptop on Best School Day. It's fabulous, but the trackpad will be troublesome so this wireless trackball mouse would be an amazing addition to our classroom!
