Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher at low-income school, every day I see the challenges that students face both in and out of the classroom. Over 50% of our students are eligible for free or reduced lunch, and nearly 15% of our students have limited English proficiency.
Despite these challenges, my students are intelligent, creative, and hardworking.
While I can't change the obstacles that many of my students face, I can make sure that I provide them with rigorous, relevant experiences to help them be successful in the real world.
My Project
Our school garden club was fortunate enough to have our first project funded in order to get our new garden club off the ground. Since then, we've built six raised garden beds with two more on the way, and we've planted dozens of seedlings for our new vegetable gardens. Students can't wait to grow and take home their own fruits and vegetables!
Our plants are ready for more support, literally!
We have a raised bed specifically dedicated to growing several varieties of tomatoes that can grow up to 8 feet tall! We are requesting your support to help us purchase garden stakes and fencing to help us build a trellis that will support our tomato plants as they continue to grow.
In addition to building our new trellis, we are also requesting some seed warming mats, seed starters, and hoses to help us get our summer seedlings growing! Students can't wait to grow strawberries, watermelons, and cantaloupes over the summer, which for some reason seem to be more popular than the kale! We are looking forward to a successful harvest this spring, summer, and into the fall!
