My Project

Recent years have challenged our students because it forced many of them to learn as lone individuals. This type of learning can not be further from what really happens in science. Science is loud! We discuss, we share ideas, we collaborate, we succeed, and we fail together in science.

The materials requested will help promote the collaborative nature of science in our classroom and in our native plant nursery.

These requested materials are all linked to a learning experience in our class.

Specific examples:

+ The food dehydrator will be used to process plants grown in our nursery. For example, Uhaloa, Mamake, and Olena are all used traditionally in la'au lapa'au. The students grow these plants in the nursery and can process these plants.

+ The UV lights and yellow glasses will be used to create a fluorescence lab where students will investigate and collect data on the phenomena of fluorescence in nature

+ The electronic burner will be used as part of our distillation lab where students repurpose invasive eucalyptus waste to create essential oil

+ The markers, pens, and whiteboard will be used to create a collaboration corner inside of our classroom where groups can hold their own group conferences

+ The battery operated fan will help us as we learn inside our plant nursery. It can get extremely hot out there and any way to cool the students down will make it better for them physically and mentally

+ The earmuffs will be used for our bioacoustics noise pollution lab and used to simulate the group who has suffered acute severe noise pollution.

+ The bypass pruners will be used to help us propagate native plants in our native plant nursery for dry mesic and wetland restoration
