My Students

My 'kids' in my room are amazing! Most come from a struggling home, whether it is poverty, a language barrier, or guardians who are working too many jobs. Yet, they come to me every day to learn, to have fun, and most importantly to be cared about and loved.

These students' daily struggles are beyond imagining.

Forget about worrying about having headphones, getting homework done, or having sensory input. They worry about whether they will have something to eat or a place to sleep, clean clothes, or a loving adult. But, here, in our classroom they can get comfort, safety and love. They can be themselves, learn a little, have a little fun, sing and dance, and know they are loved no matter what.

My Project

We are so blessed here at our school and receive a grant for healthy fruit and vegetables for snack time 4 days a week. The kindergarteners in our classrooms come to depend on these snacks daily to help keep their bodies and minds focused on learning, practice table manners and being kind. Unfortunately, since we only have it four days a week that leaves one day with no snack.

"Sometimes the smallest things, take up the most room in our hearts" -Winnie the Pooh.

Our students come from many different situations in their home lives where providing enough for just their own families is a daily struggle. In response, the teachers on my team often purchase snacks for their whole class to help our kids not only not be hungry, but stay in routine which is essential for many Kindergarteners. These snacks help us by keeping routines, having consistency, maintaining focus as well as emotion control, and providing the kids with a sense of community.
