It's the Basic Necessities

Help me give my students basic classroom necessities such as construction paper, looseleaf paper, markers, Post-it notes and a sharpener.

My Students

My students in Brooklyn are from diverse backgrounds. They are eager readers and writers of the 21st century. The stories they read and write come alive, not only from written texts but also from media text (e.g., social media and the like). Our school uses the Mood Meter based on R.U.L.E.R. components from Yale University that help us enhance our learning in the classroom by focusing on social-emotional learning.

In our school, our population focus is on English language learners and students with disabilities and because of this, we put our students' character first, which then joins hands with our content that we teach.

When we put our students' emotions first, we build trust, empathy, and loyalty within our community of learners.

Our readers and writers are our leaders of tomorrow. They are our convincers of the present and our future. Our students use their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills to build a better future for themselves, their families and their local communities.

My Project

Our classroom is in need of basic necessities such as: Crayola markers, pencil sharpeners, post-it notes, sharpies, paper clips, binder clips and more. Our students will use these materials to help their assignments and projects come to life. They will be using these items not weekly, but DAILY. In order to progress forward and be college and career ready, our classroom needs resources that help us move forward.

Our students are extremely creative and will use the resources to produce and showcase their English Language Arts and College and Career readiness projects in the classroom.

The products listed in the project are the basic necessities students need in order to be successful in the classroom. Oftentimes, I go days with saying, "Sorry, we don't have that" or "Try to bring your own." This is disheartening considering we expect students to have the materials. However, coming from our neighborhood and environment, this is not something that can be expected each year. In our classroom, we practice affirming statements and with these materials, our students can continue to do their very best every single day. This is how we prepare students to be college and career ready. The resources and education allow students to be ready to face the world!
