Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I have an after-school mentoring group for 3rd-5th-grade girls. A group of approximately thirty girls will meet weekly to discuss life-related issues of friendship, diversity, peer pressure and determination. The group will also have a monthly book club meeting and participate in STEM projects like FIRST LEGO League and district tech fair. This group of girls will learn to put aside their differences as they bond over lessons and projects.

Many students at our school come from homeless shelters or low socioeconomic backgrounds and need all of the resources they can get at school! Each day they come in excited to share what happened to them over the weekend, or that night. It would be amazing to give them books that they can connect to.

My Project

My students are interested in film and eager to be taught more film acting techniques to add to their STEM culture they already know. We have decided to create a tech talent show that will showcase their STEM skills. The cameras will help preserve what they learned. They also need a printer to print and display their digital art. The tripod is so they can learn how to shoot video like the experts.

While they love to be occasionally filmed, learning real skills to make them better actors from doing group film projects would be so enriching.

Many are interested in film acting, shooting, and storyboarding as possible career options, and the best way to learn those skills is to apply them while making a collaboratively filmed short project. With your help, my students will be able to "Shoot for the Stars"!
