Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
100% of students in our school receive free and reduced price lunch. Many of our students come from a low socioeconomic status. These wonderful students come to school ready to learn and accomplish great things. Our school services approximately 1600 students in grades 9, 10, 11, and 12.
Traumatic childhood experiences can impact overall student performance and engagement.
While students are often aware of their adversities, the majority never learn how to cope with them. They have never been taught how to manage stress, anxiety, trauma, grief, and so on. This project is to help our students learn different coping skills. Through group therapy exercises they will learn how to connect, engage, and support peers while learning how to self regulate emotions. My goal with this project is to reach as many students as I can throughout the school year. We will meet bi-weekly as a small group discussing different mental health issues. This will be led by a school counselor and any other faculty that wishes to assist.
My Project
With these materials students will be able to participate small group therapy sessions where we will discuss different topics throughout the school year. They will learn how to cope with a variety of different issues such as anxiety, suicidal ideation, depression, traumatic experiences and more.
Students need to be taught how to cope with their emotions, especially when they have experienced childhood trauma.
Often our children come to us having suffered many Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE's) and lack the soft skills to become productive citizens in the modern world. Students need to be taught how to self regulate and cope with what they are dealing with on a daily basis.
With this project, I will begin "Lunch & Learn" small group therapy sessions that will take place twice a month throughout the school year in an attempt to teach a wide variety of coping skills to my students.
