My students need adapted feeding equipment in order to eat and drink in a safe manner. They are working on learning how to feed themselves and to be as independent as possible.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are classified as multiply handicapped. They are diagnosed with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, or other developmental/language/communication disorders. Some of the students are non-verbal and dependent on others for most activities of daily living.
My students attend a special needs high school in Brooklyn, New York.
Most of the students come from a low socio-economic background.
Despite their various disabilities, my students enjoy coming to school and participating in any way they can. They can be successful with adapted materials and equipment (i.e., feeding equipment, communication devices).
My Project
I am a speech therapist and I work with students who have feeding and swallowing difficulties. My students require adapted feeding utensils in order to eat in a safe manner. If a student is fed from a staff member, they require an appropriate spoon. If a student is learning to feed themselves, they may require adapted utensils to learn to scoop food onto a spoon or to use adapted cups with handles.
My students need the most appropriate feeding equipment in order for them to eat or feed themselves in a safe manner.
I want my students to enjoy eating during their mealtimes.
I will work in conjunction with the Occupational Therapist and classroom staff in order to identify the most appropriate feeding equipment for our students.
