This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Do you remember being in school in late August or early September and trying to learn while you were dripping with sweat and sticking to your chair? Sure, the teacher could turn on a fan, but then no one could hear the instructions. Sure, the teacher could open a window, but then in come pesky bees.
My students are the best kids in the country.
They live in a crime-ridden neighborhood and many of them have experienced the tragedy of gang violence within their families, but they come to school everyday and they come to learn. Our school underwent a transformation almost 2 years ago to restaff the school with highly-qualified teachers and a new principal. This school is amazing! We still have the exact same students as when the school was failing, but with a new staff, we have transformed the culture and climate of the school to one of academic and behavioral excellence. The students are excited to learn, they know their teachers love them and they love them in return. They are learning and achieving levels of academic success that they never dreamed of. They are proud of themselves and their school and it shows on their faces and in their school work.
This year our school was accepted in a program to become a year-round school. Because of the levels of gang violence in the neighborhood and the lack of structure and learning over the summer, we believe a year-round school year will benefit our children with regard to their safety and academics. The problem, however, is that our school building is over 100 years old and the district will not allow window air conditioning units. The cost of renovating the building for central air is too costly for the school budget and so teachers must resort to opening windows or using fans. If you have ever been asked to work in 90 degree heat for 6 hours a day, you know that windows and fans just don't do enough to cool down a room for optimal teaching and learning. For this reason, I am requesting a portable floor unit air conditioner for my classroom. Because the unit does not need to be installed in the window, it meets the district regulations and will be of great benefit to my students.
This project is so important because children must be comfortable in order to think and learn.
If they are distracted by a basic need like hunger, then we feed them. But there is little I can do to change the weather in the summertime. I can, however, ask that you help us meet the basic need of comfort during those hot summer months so we can spend the time learning and growing instead of sweating and swatting away bees.
