It's Beginning to SOUND like Christmas.

My Students

What are the holidays without music! My students need a boost in Mathematics and I believe that music is a good way to boost Mathematical thinking!!! Music cheers up the soul, provides cultural opportunities, and allows students to gain a new skill to share. Performing for others will be invaluable!

My students attend a neighborhood school that values learning!

They live near a noted University and understand the value of an education; however, due to various backgrounds and experiences, they have a hard time listening and following directions. They are motivated and willing "to run with it" but they start running before they have "it". Being able to play music takes skill, attention to detail, and a concerted effort to follow the conductor. Playing music together will require their best efforts and enhance their thrill to perform for others/in front of others. By learning the value of practicing and the need to stay together in the music, their sense of rhythm and their ability to listen and follow will be greatly enhanced allowing them to truly "run with it"!

My Project

The gifting of 30 recorders with sheet music could be a life changing experience for any one of my students. Up to this point, their school music experience has just been choral. The additional skill of actually playing an instrument will be an eye opener. Being able to keep the beat, understanding rhythm, having an ability to read notes, and following a conductor will all open further opportunities to them in junior high and high school as they have greater choice in the classes they take. Music and theater could be where and how these students stay in school. A new performing arts high school has just opened up nearby!!! For now, with the recorders and music, they will be able to exert themselves in learning how to play the recorder with said music to be able to perform during the annual 4th grade Holiday Breakfast. They will perform in front of peers and parents. What better motivation to excel, to be exact, to feel accomplishment!

We don't remember everything from our childhood. But special moments of pure excitement and proud accomplishments, especially when mixed with family and friends are usually highlights of childhood memories. Besides the high of performing, my goal is to grow better Mathematicians in a world that greatly needs Mathematicians who understand math and can use it in the real world. Let this be the year of solidifying MATH understanding for these kids!
