Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are creme of the crop 7th graders that are genuinely interested in making their school a better place to learn. We have had continuous conversations about what makes a school a great place to learn and their main focus has been on cleanliness and overall student attitude. We have spent time outside cleaning up trash that people discard and time inside class brainstorming different ways to better take care of our school so that others can see why we take so much pride in it. My students have excelled in understanding vital signs as well as the different parts of the brain that control our senses.

The majority of my students come from a background of low income families.

All of them have great aspirations for the future and a very large capacity for communication. They concentrate well when their work is made relevant to them, and respond well to REAL individuals that aren't here for personal gain.

My Project

We are a STEM school and our emphasis in student learning is in applying what they have learned in our classes to problem solving that will make the world around them a better place. We have been working for the majority of the semester to make sure students understand the DEAL Engineering Design Process and can apply it to different scenarios that they encounter.

My class has decided that our class DEAL project will be on making sure the school looks better inside and out to increase the appeal and positive perceptions of our school.

With these materials, my students will be able to keep their school clean and have a project that they can be proud of for years to come.

The Trash grabbers will be used to speed up the process of picking up trash because our students have 45 minutes in each period and we are needing to pick up all around the school. The amount of trash bags are needed to make sure that My two classes 20 students will have enough bags to fill up for 18 weeks of cleaning. The Gloves are for students to stay sanitary and feel comfortable while picking up trash around our building.

This is my first year doing this with a group of students, and I believe this could spark a culture of school pride that our students could greatly benefit from.
