My students need 70 copies (two class sets) of Edith Hamilton's Mythology.

Remember being swept away by tales of gods and goddesses and dashing heroes and heroines? Imagine the excitement students feel when they are exposed to classical myths for the first time.
My students are creative, curious learners who need high-interest reading materials for our unit on Greek Mythology.
Our school is a low-income, Title I school in Los Angeles without resources to provide enough myth books for each student. This year, all ninth grade teachers collaborated on developing a unit on mythology, but we are rotating two class sets of a lower-grade myth book (written at the elementary level) between 10 different classes. Having individual books at the high-school reading level would help my students gain valuable knowledge about Greek Mythology and help them understand how other authors allude to these myths appear over and over again in literature throughout history.
With their own copies of Mythology, students would be able to take the books home to read, which would free up valuable time for more discussion and activities during class. Right now we have to share books, so students aren't able to take them home individually. In our myth unit, students will learn about the classical gods and goddesses, the complex family tree of Greek heroes and heroines, Greek root words and vocabulary enrichment. Most importantly, they will be able to recognize allusions to mythology in other works of literature and non-fiction texts. They will develop a solid foundation for future studies in Greek Tragedy (plays) and epic poetry (The Iliad/The Odyssey).
The donation of these books will improve my class pacing.
We will be able to cover more material in a shorter period of time because students will be able to read at home. They will also be able to collaborate with other classes on projects, performances, and discussion because everyone can now read the books at the same time and not have to wait for one class to be done with the books before getting them for themselves.
